FAQ

Flamethrowers are federally unregulated in the United States — the BATF does not consider them a firearm. No NFA tax stamp, weapons license, or FFL dealer required. State-level restrictions only apply in CA and MD. For more details, visit our FAQ page.
The X15 runs on standard pump fuels — typically a diesel + gasoline mix. The user manual recommends starting with a 90% diesel / 10% gasoline blend for the most consistent ignition. From there:
- More gasoline → easier ignition and a more volatile burn
- Add napalm mix → run 50/50 diesel + gasoline with 1oz napalm scoop per gallon for a thickened fuel that clings to targets and creates a sustained burn — perfect for igniting hard-to-light material
Two propellant tanks complete the system: one 20oz CO2 tank (included) for fuel pressure, and a 14oz propane tank (purchased separately at any hardware store) for the pilot torch ignitor. Refillable CO2 tanks and napalm starter kits are sold separately in our Accessories section.
The X15 uses pressurized CO2 to propel fuel out of the wand — not a fuel pump. CO2’s expansive force is what gives the X15 its 50ft range. No pump-driven flamethrower can match it.
Each X15 ships with one refillable 20oz CO2 tank. The system runs best at 400–700 PSI (1,000 PSI max). CO2 pressure fluctuates with temperature, so cold-weather runs may need a brief warm-up before peak performance. CO2 tanks are widely available — paintball shops, sporting goods stores, and welding supply shops can refill them in minutes for a few dollars. Most owners keep a spare tank on hand for hot-swap during longer sessions.
Both run on diesel (or diesel + napalm mix) and use the same propellant system. The split comes down to power vs practicality:
- X15 is the practical workhorse — 50ft range, 3.3-gallon tank, the most popular flamethrower in the lineup. Built for everyday land work: brush clearing, prescribed agricultural burns, snow and ice removal.
- XL18 is the flagship — 110ft+ range, 0.5 gallons/second flow rate, the most powerful production flamethrower made. Built for buyers who want maximum range and visual impact: pyrotechnic events, public demonstrations, fire-crew training.
If you want serious firepower for practical land work, the X15 is the answer. If you want the biggest, baddest, longest-reaching flamethrower in the lineup, the XL18 is the better fit.

Brandon K –
Love it. It throws fire exactly as videos. Makes lighting a bonfire real easy and I cleaned out my grown up fence rows QUICK.
Adam C –
You love fire? the x15 is a great tool for that job. Throwflame doesn’t cease to disappoint, responds to emails, love my unit would definitely recommend its easy to use and refuel like the simplicity and how long you can shoot it a minute continuous fire feels much longer. With a flamethrower. And pretty decent range multiple pros almost non existent cons.
Daniel B –
This is not a glorified blow torch its the real deal. I like to make people smile and nothing puts a smile quite like a 50ft flame its reminiscent of a fire breathing dragon. Easy to use, refuel and loads of fun i’m planning on upgrading to the xl18 for more power! Gonna miss the run time of x15 though.

This is the most incredible item I have ever purchased. While it’s not only a blast – heh, heh, to use/play with, it’s actually quite useful. I use it for burning the tops off of noxious weeds such as knapweed, thistlle, dandelions, etc. thereby destroying as many seeds as possible, burning slash piles, and burning dead grass and weeds in the spring prior to green-up. It’s effective and FUN. And in the event of an invasion on American soil or other war-like event that requires home protection, I’ll be more ready than most…”Spread It On!”
