The XL18 runs on diesel by itself, or on a diesel + gasoline mix when used with a napalm mix fuel additive.
The napalm mix is not required to operate the XL18 — plain diesel works fine — but it’s what unlocks the XL18’s full range and visual impact: longer firing distance, longer burn time per shot, and the dramatic clinging burn napalm is known for. Owners chasing maximum range and shock-factor run thickened diesel + gasoline.
The unit ships with one 20oz CO2 tank for propellant pressure. Refillable CO2 tanks and napalm starter kits are sold separately in our Accessories section.
The XL18 uses pressurized CO2 to propel fuel out of the wand — not a fuel pump. CO2’s expansive force is what gives the XL18 its 110ft+ range. No pump-driven flamethrower can match it.
Each XL18 ships with one refillable 20oz CO2 tank. CO2 tanks are widely available — paintball shops, sporting goods stores, and welding supply shops can refill them in minutes for a few dollars. Most owners keep a spare tank or two on hand for hot-swap during longer sessions.
Both run on diesel (or diesel + napalm mix) and use the same propellant system. The split comes down to power vs practicality:
- XL18 is the flagship — 110ft+ range, 0.5 gallons/second flow rate, and 10× more firepower than the X15 per the official user manual. The most powerful production flamethrower made. - X15 is the practical workhorse at 50ft+ range. Same napalm capability in a more affordable package — ideal for prescribed agricultural burns, ground clearing, and everyday land management.
If you want the biggest and baddest flamethrower in the lineup, the XL18 is the answer. If you want napalm capability for ag work and clearing, the X15 is the better fit.

What you’ll need:
- CO2 Tank(s), filled – Each XL18 includes one empty 20oz tank. Extra tanks are available here, or they can be found online or at most sporting goods stores.
- 8oz Butane (isobutane) canister – Widely available at Walmart, camping/sporting goods stores, and online for just a few dollars.

Mine has the pressure regulator and very detailed instructions which you want to follow because unlike other “flamethrowers” on the market, this is NOT a toy–think 1969 jungles of Vietnam–its that powerful!! It only lasts 6 or 7 seconds on full blast but that amounts to around 20 short bursts– obliterates weeds, zombies, and even the proverbial terminator cyborg that comes along every once in a while….. a little pricey. Still, you get what you pay for and Throwflame is up to the task— besides, who doesn’t want to own a flamethrower?
